Portion of west Charlotte road to close for months due to airport taxiway construction

CHARLOTTE — A nearly one-mile portion of a major west Charlotte road will close for several months because of construction work on a new taxiway at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

West Boulevard from Piney Top Drive to Steele Creek Road will close on Jan. 3 and be permanently realigned to make room for the taxiway, airport officials said.

The work will take about four months to complete.

Crews will install traffic signals to ensure traffic flows along the detours.

Those detours are:

  • Local traffic detour: Use Byrum Drive to navigate between Steele Creek Road and Yorkmont Road.
  • Local traffic detour: Use Shopton Road to travel between Sandy Porter Road and Beam Road.
  • Extended traffic detour: Motorists traveling from further south should use West Arrowood Road to access Sandy Porter Road and South Tryon Street.

Airport officials said the South End Taxiway project is essential to CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway Program and aims to improve safety by eliminating crossings of the center runway.

The taxiway will be west of Runway 36C and will allow landing planes to maneuver and circulate around both the new and existing center runways.

The portion of West Boulevard is expected to reopen by spring.
