Popular South End brewery’s beer label takes dig at 2020, gets rejected

CHARLOTTE — A South End brewery got creative and took a dig at 2020, a year that was rough all around.

However, not everyone is on board with the explicit labeling on the product the brewery wants to sell.

Sycamore Brewing tried to get “F” 2020 printed on one of its hard seltzer products. The popular brewery had to request it through the state’s ABC Commission.

The commission rejected it though, saying it cannot approve product labels it determines to be “undignified, immodest or in bad taste.”

Channel 9 spoke with some people in South End, who said they understand the label can be offensive, especially if the product is sold in stores where children can read it.

But for the most part, they thought the labeling was OK.

“I think that’s a great name because 2020 did suck, and 2021 is having a rough start, as well,” said one person. “So, maybe they’ll make another one.”

“2020 was just a unique year, and we’ve had to endure many life-changing events, so I give them the excuse. I’d excuse them for it,” Daniel Smith told Channel 9.
