Officer shoots, kills man at Coyote Joe’s nightclub

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says an officer shot and killed a man outside Coyote Joe’s in west Charlotte around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said an officer was working off-duty at the nightclub on Wilkinson Boulevard and called in about someone with a gun. Once other officers arrived on scene, an officer felt a threat and shot and killed the man with the gun, Jennings said.

The man died on scene.

Jennings told Channel 9 there is indication that the man with the gun was trying to harm himself, but said that will be part of the SBI investigation. The State Bureau of Investigations takes the lead on all shootings involving officers.

Police said the off-duty officer and the other officers on scene were wearing body cameras. Those cameras and surveillance cameras will be part of the investigation.

No officers were hurt, but one officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution to check his vitals, Jennings said.

A spokesperson for Coyote Joe’s said they cannot comment at this time, because it is an active police investigation.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
