CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested and charged a man accused of shooting a 15-year-old girl in west Charlotte last Wednesday night.
Officials said Jamal Dean has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging firearm into occupied proper, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Dean is expected to make his first court appear Tuesday.
Authorities said the quick thinking of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer may have saved the teenager’s life after she was hit by a bullet during the drive-by shooting.

Authorities said someone in a car fired several shots at a group of people on Mulberry Pond Drive around 8:45 p.m.
Police said a 15-year-old girl, who was not the intended target, was shot in the leg, hitting her femoral artery.
One of the first officers to arrive immediately applied a tourniquet on the girl’s leg, stopping the bleeding long enough for her to be rushed to the hospital.
Officials told Channel 9 she is expected to be OK.

About 10 minutes after the drive-by shooting, a man showed up at the urgent care on East Morehead Street with a minor gunshot wound to his hand. Detectives are trying to determine if he was involved in the shooting.
No arrests have been made.
