Lake Norman patrols will make sure boaters comply with social distancing

CORNELIUS, N.C. — With many people looking to take advantage of the gorgeous upcoming weekend and get outside, the important thing to remember is no matter where you get fresh air, you have to follow social distancing guidelines.

It can be tempting, especially when the weather is this nice, to want to go out on the lake. And while it is allowed, officials really want people to know that they still cannot gather in large groups and still need to practice social distancing.

Chopper 9 meteorologist Tony Sadiku checked with Cornelius police who said officers are patrolling Lake Norman like they always do. They’re seeking voluntary compliance but do have the authority to issue citations or make misdemeanor arrests if need be.

The message from the chief was that social distancing applies to how many people are in your boat as well.

The goal, of course, is to minimize the spread of COVID-19 while we all try to get some fresh air.
