CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a man in connection with a deadly shooting at an apartment complex steps away from UNC Charlotte.

Javier Concepcion-Perez, 20, has been charged with the murder of 22-year-old Donqwavias “Quay” Davis.

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Wednesday at the University Village apartments, one day after an armed man opened fire on students at UNCC during the last day of classes, killing two people and wounding four others.

A group gathered Thursday night to honor Davis in University City.

"Donqwavias enjoyed people,” his mother, Clydia Davis, said. “He enjoyed helping people. He enjoyed doing for others he enjoyed sports. He was just a man of multi-talents."

Friends and family members were at Porter Ridge High School on Thursday night, where Davis graduated from. They said they will miss his willingness to give back.

“I like to think of myself as a pretty good judge of character, and I felt the connection right off the bat,” friend Mike Wienecke said.

Davis loved to play sports and wanted to start a music career.

Now, many said the news of his murder is hard to believe.

"Nobody would intentionally just murder Quay, you just couldn’t,” friend Kim Wienecke said. “There's no way you could dislike or hate Quay."

According to investigators, Davis was found shot near the pool area of the complex. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police said Davis was not affiliated with the university. Officials added that the shooting did not appear to be a random act, saying there was an altercation beforehand.

People who live nearby said they consider the area a pretty safe place. Channel 9's Briana Harper spoke with a student who said he was walking home from Wednesday night's vigil on campus when he saw a bunch of police lights outside of the complex.

"It's just so sudden. This is really bad, especially after everything that happened yesterday. Yesterday's attack caught everyone off guard so this is just hitting us again. We're stronger than this, we're better than this. It's time for a change," Amjad Eltahir said.

Davis' slaying was Charlotte's 47th homicide of the year.
