Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call on Gibbons Link Road around 8 p.m. Friday.

Upon arrival, officers said they found 21-year-old Robert McManus lying in the road suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers said he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to CMPD, McManus smashed the window of a vehicle on Nathan Drive and then punched a woman, who was parked in a driveway on Gibbons Link Road, for no apparent reason. The victim told officers she did not know McManus and the assault was unprovoked.

Officers said McManus continued walking on Gibbons Link Road when a man drove by in a car and McManus jumped onto the hood. When the man stopped, McManus reportedly smashed out a window of the vehicle and the man opened fire, killing him.

The shooter reportedly called 911 after the shooting and is being questioned by officers.

A neighbor who heard the man make the 911 call said he told police exactly what happened and was arrested when they arrived.

"He was telling them exactly what happened and from there the cops showed up and asked him to put his hands up and put the phone down so they can see his hands," neighbor Barbara Gibbs said. The driver's side window was smashed out, the back passenger window was smashed out, and I think the front windshield had a crack in it."

Officials said it appears McManus and the shooter did not know each other prior to the incident and no criminal charges have been filed at this point.

According to CMPD, the District Attorney's Office will determine if the man who killed McManus will be prosecuted.

Visitors who are staying in the neighborhhod for the NBA All-Star Weekend told Channel 9's Stephanie Tinoco scenes like this one make them uneasy.

"It's kind of surprising. I didn't expect this when I came down. I guess All-Star Weekend is starting commotion or something," Antoine Yancey said.

Gibbs said she watched as McManus' mother prayed for her son's survival after the shooting.

"My neighbor said 'I think someone got shot' and I was like 'What, where,'" Gibbs said "She was parked over there. You heard the crying and the praying. It was very shocking."
