CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A former Chester police sergeant has turned herself in at the York County jail to face a child neglect charge just hours after being released from the Mecklenburg County jail on the same charge.

Deputies booked Audrey Schurig into the York County jail just before 4 p.m. Thursday. Earlier in the day, a judge in Charlotte set her bond at $1,000 on a child neglect charge.

South Carolina investigators said Schurig had neglected her infant son by not reporting that her husband allegedly abused the boy. Her infant son has been in the hospital for several weeks.

Thursday morning, Schurig's father was pleased by the judge's decision to allow his daughter out on bond.

Schurig, at the time a sergeant with the Chester police department, and her boyfriend, Jeff Taylor, an officer with the York police department, have been under investigation since they rushed their son Jackson to a hospital in Rock Hill last month.

He was quickly transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte with what doctors describe as critical injuries to his brain and neck.

In court Thursday morning, Schurig stood quietly as her attorney told the judge she had been with her son almost nonstop since he arrived at the hospital in Charlotte several weeks earlier.

After the hearing, Schurig's father told reporters he is happy that she was released from the Mecklenburg County jail, but suggested that there would be more to say later.

"I hope there's a better picture for the media and everybody else to realize what's going on," he said.
