CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified a man in a wheelchair who was was hit and killed by a car in northeast Charlotte late Saturday night.
Police said 46-year-old Maize Gilmer Baskerville died in the crash that happened just after 11 p.m. on West Sugar Creek Road.
Officials said the man was hit by a Toyota Corolla traveling in the far right lane on the roadway. After hitting the man in the wheelchair, the Corolla was rear-ended by a Dodge Magnum.
MEDIC transported Baskerville to Atrium Health, but he died from his injuries.
Police said both drivers stayed on scene after the crash and were interviewed by detectives. CMPD added speed and impairment were not factors for the drivers.
It is not known if the victim was trying to cross the road at the time of the crash. Investigators said he was not in a crosswalk.
Officials said they are working to determine what led up to the crash.
