Police: Man holding 1-year-old daughter hit by bullet when shots fired outside Rock Hill home

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill police said a man was shot while holding his 1-year-old daughter when someone opened fire outside his home.

An officer responded to a call for service at a home on Carolina Avenue just after midnight Monday.

Upon arrival, the officer said he saw a woman standing at the front door of the home waving her arms in distress.

Once inside the home, the officer said he found a man on the living room floor suffering from a gunshot wound to the right shin.

The 31-year-old victim reportedly told police that he was sleeping on the couch with his daughter when he heard gunshots and felt a pain in his leg.

The woman said she was sleeping in the bedroom when she woke to the sound of gunshots.

When asked if they heard or saw anyone outside prior to the shooting, they both said no.

The officer learned that there were three other children inside the home at the time of the shooting, but they were not injured.

The victim was taken to Piedmont Medical Center. He has since returned from the hospital and is recovering at home.

A forensics team was called to canvass the scene, and investigators observed multiple bullet entry holes in the front of the house.

Police said right now, they do not have information indicating why someone would shooting into the house.

"Right now, we have no leads. We don't know a reason," Capt. Mark Bollinger from Rock Hill Police Department said.

Police said the family is very fortunate and a shot could have hit a child in the home.

"Some people think if they're not in the front of the house, the round is going to stop and it doesn't," Bollinger said. "It's definitely scary when there are children in the house and people are shooting.

Neighbor Margret Gayten heard the gunshots from her home next door and thought about the children inside.

"I believe they were four shots," Gayten said. "Kids ain't supposed to be in something like that."
