Police investigate deadly shooting in Concord

CONCORD, N.C. — The Concord Police Department was investigating a deadly shooting Thursday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot of Danny’s Place on Church Street near Buffalo Avenue.

Police said the suspect, Deamonte Leeshawn Howard, 26, of Concord, left the scene on foot and the victim, Nijel La’te Hitchcock, 24, of Charlotte, left in a vehicle. The victim was traveling north on Church Street before crashing near Winecoff Avenue, according to police. Hitchcock died at the scene.

Howard was charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

This incident was not random, because the two knew each other. There is no threat to the public, police said.
