ROCK HILL, S.C. — A man was arrested Tuesday morning after shooting a 23-year-old woman in both arms Monday afternoon, according to Rock Hill police.
Rock Hill police said they responded to the shooting at 5:13 p.m. at the intersection of Gates Avenue and Bellingrath Boulevard.
Officers arrived at the scene to find a woman who had been shot in each arm. Police provided medical attention to the woman until EMS arrived and took her to a local hospital. Her identity has not been released.
That woman says she drove as fast as possible away from those gunshots and once she got home she saw that one of the bullets went through her trunk and into her car.
“I was like, they’re shooting. All I could think was to get out of dodge” said the woman in the car.
Her neighbor and friend Lawrence Brewton expressed his concern.
“She had just dropped her daughter off and had her daughter been in the car she would have been shot,” said Brewton said.
Authorities identified 19-year-old Zekiah Chrison Barber as the suspect in the shooting.
Criminal investigators said they believe a fight in the roadway led to Barber firing a gun, shooting an innocent woman standing nearby. Officers believe she may have been standing with other people, watching the fight.
Barber was taken to the Rock Hill jail and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and discharging a firearm into a vehicle.
In the meantime, neighbors are hoping lessons are learned.
“My hope is awareness, because at the end of the day that’s a young man that won’t get a chance at life,” Brewton said.
There is no word yet on whether the suspect and victim knew each other.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call 803-329-7293.
