MATTHEWS, N.C. — Matthews police are investigating the reported sexual assault of a young girl Tuesday morning.
The attack was reported around 6:30 a.m.at the Windsor Landing Apartments off East Independence Boulevard, police said.
People who live at the apartment complex are rattled.
"I have three small children. It really does worry me," a resident identified only as Vicki said.
She and her neighbors were alarmed when they walked out to see crime scene tape stretched around the tennis court.
Investigators have not released details on the victim's age or specifics about the attack.
"I just never thought this could happen in my backyard," Vicki said.
Shonda Boone said she was shaken by the incident.
"I'm scared to come outside," she said.
Channel 9 asked if the attack was random. Officers said they are still working to gather information on whether the victim knew her attacker.
Without more information, renters are questioning whether their families are safe.
"I feel very unsafe with my family here, not knowing they don't have any answers to what took place here," resident Dexter Kelly said.
Police don't believe there is any threat to the public, but they're adding extra patrols to calm fears.
Police are discussing security measures with apartment management.
