Officers were called around 8 p.m. to the 1000 block of North Wendover Road, where they found 30-year-old Carson Christian Jr. inside a car.
Christian had been shot and paramedics tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they arrested Treymaine Delmar Johnson, 23, on Friday and charged him with murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Channel 9 spoke to a friend of Christian's, who said he was stunned by the loss.
"He's just a young man. His life is gone," the friend said.
Police have not said what led to the shooting.
“We've got plenty of officers here on scene canvassing the area, interviewing the witnesses and trying to figure out what happened, so we can hold the appropriate parties accountable for their actions,” a police spokesperson said.
Concern over Charlotte homicide rate grows
Christian's slaying marked Charlotte's 19th homicide of the year.

At this same time last year, only seven killings had taken place in Charlotte.
Police are clearly concerned with the number of homicides, and CMPD Capt. Cecil Brisbon told Channel 9 that so far, there is no new info on the killing of Christian.
“I can tell you that in several of these situations, the offenders have been known to the victims,” Brisbon said. “So that is one thing that comes up. But one homicide is too many. Seven is too many last year, 19 is too many this year.”
For Judy Williams, the founder of Mothers of Murdered Offspring, it's a call to action.
"We're going to do a campaign, through signage, through whatever we need to, in order to get people to constantly be seeing something, that may hopefully affect the way we think," Williams said.
Brisbon said that if there is a silver lining, they have made arrests in 14 of the 19 homicides so far this year.
