CHESTER, S.C. — Chester police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl after her father and his girlfriend were unable to wake her up Wednesday morning, according to officials.
Chester County Emergency Services responded to a call for an unresponsive child at 95 White Oak Street around 8:20 a.m., authorities said.
Channel 9 has been told the girl was found not breathing, and her father and his girlfriend called 911 after they couldn't wake her.
The Chester Police Department Investigations Division responded to the scene, along with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and a solicitor. Channel 9 has been told investigators obtained a search warrant for the house, but it has not been confirmed what, if anything, was found.
Officials said the girl was taken to Chester Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The Chester County coroner identified the girl as Khole Simone Adams on Thursday.
Neighbors said they were trick-or-treating with the child Tuesday night and everything seemed fine.
Robin Boddie is one of several people who knew the little girl.
"This right here is a tragedy," Boddie said. "She was a happy, joyful baby. She loved to play with other kids, liked to have fun."
Channel 9 spoke to some people who claimed that the child was given tainted Halloween candy, but Chester police said late Wednesday afternoon they had no evidence of that and had not heard that information from anyone in the public.
Officials said there is no obvious cause of death, and more may not be known until an autopsy is done. Investigators said they're not aware of any medical conditions the child may have had.
The incident is still under investigation, officials said.
An autopsy of Adams is scheduled for Thursday.
