CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A city bus driver has been charged after a man was killed in a hit-and-run collision in northeast Charlotte Tuesday morning.
It happened just before 11:30 a.m. on North Tryon Street, near Bingham Drive.
When officers got to the scene, they said they found 58-year-old Michael Skelton Jr. lying in the street near a Charlotte Area Transit System bus stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, an investigation into Skelton’s death revealed that he was at the bus stop when he was struck by CATS bus number 1079.
Police said the bus arrived at the stop around 11:18 a.m. and Skelton was hit while trying to get the bus driver to stop. After the collision, police said the bus driver, Luis Manuel Garcia, kept going without trying to help Skelton.
Garcia has been charged with felony hit and run.
Detectives said speed and impairment were not contributing factors for Garcia, but impairment is suspected for Skelton. Test results are pending.
