GASTONIA, N.C. — Police said two people have been charged after a man was shot and killed in a Gaston County road Sunday afternoon.
Jordan Chambers, 21, will face a judge Tuesday on charges related to the murder of 22-year-old Avery Ponder.
Destynee Woodberry was charged with accessory after the fact of second-degree murder.
The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. on West Hudson Boulevard near Clyde Street in Gastonia.
Police said when they got to the area, they found Ponder in the roadway suffering from a gunshot wound.
Ponder was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, but he later died from his injuries.
Officials said multiple people were at the scene with shooting happened.
“I figured I better see what was going on," a woman at the scene said. "Nobody was here but the family. Me and another passerby stopped just to make sure everything was OK."
Gastonia police said Ponder and Chambers had an argument Saturday. Sunday, they were riding in two separate cars with two separate groups of people when they saw each other on West Hudson Boulevard.
Officials said Chambers shot and killed Ponder and then, the driver of Chambers' car drove off.
Chambers, who was initially wanted for questioning, turned himself in early Tuesday morning and was charged with second-degree murder.
Ponder was a former football player for Crest High School near Shelby. His mother said she is grief stricken, but the arrest gives her and her family some relief.
