CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating after a 10-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning in east Charlotte while trying to catch her school bus.
Officers and Medic were called at 7 a.m. to Sterling Haven Road, between Harrisburg and Albemarle roads.
A witness told Channel 9 that the little girl was running across the parking lot of an apartment complex to get a school bus stopped on Pence Road. The witness said a car was speeding in the parking lot and hit the girl.
"All I heard was a big thump, like a boom and when I heard that, that's when the little girl started screaming," witness Kimberly Doctor said.
The 10-year-old was hit in the legs. She was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.
Police said the driver initially left the scene because family members were causing a disturbance but later returned.
It's not clear if the driver will face charges.
