Police are investigating to find out what led to the death of 22-year-old Washington Herman Ryles -- Charlotte’s 58th homicide of 2017.

Police said they have information about a subject, but it is too vague to share.

"We know gunfire took place, obviously,” said Maj. Mike Smathers of the CMPD. “We know we have some victims, but what led to all of that, we're still trying to work through."

Neighbor Adam Sutton said he watched from inside his home as investigators collected evidence.

“I heard a couple bursts of gunshots,” Sutton said. “Shortly after, there were a bunch of people yelling. We had the window open, just kind of shut the window, called 911."

Police said four people were in the apartment around 11 a.m. when the shooting occurred.

When officers arrived at the scene they said one man was on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ryles was found dead on the apartment's front porch.

Police said they have been working with residents to improve the area.

"They've described it kind of as a rejuvenated complex that's doing well, so it’s really unfortunate that this occurred here,” Smathers said.

"The neighborhood is definitely improving. It's a shame this is happening,” Sutton said.
