CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a teenager accused of shooting and killing a man in northeast Charlotte on Sunday.

Shawn Sanders, 17, has been charged with the murder of 22-year-old Subhi Elmasharawy, who died on Wednesday.

Sanders is also facing a burglary charge.

The shooting happened before 9 p.m. Sunday on Pimpernel Road, near the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus.

Officers said when they arrived on the scene, they found a 22-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not said what led to the shooting, but they said this was not a random shooting and the two people involved apparently knew each other.

Sources told Channel 9 the incident involved a shootout between the victim inside the house and someone outside the house.

Neighbor Duane Stinson told Channel 9's Mark Becker there were so many shots, he thought at first that they were fireworks.

"I heard six, seven consecutive shots. That's why I thought it was fireworks," Stinson said. "Then, I heard three more, so that sorta lends itself to it being a shootout, like, a barrage of fire."

"It was scary, especially, you know, when you have kids walking down to the bus stop and things like that," said Stinson.

Officers identified three witnesses to the shooting after arriving on the scene and are interviewing them for further information.

This is Charlotte's fourth homicide victim of 2019.

The first homicide of 2019 in Charlotte happened less than three hours into the new year on Highlander Court, where a 53-year-old man was shot and killed outside his home in the Derita neighborhood.

The second homicide happened hours later, when a 37-year-old man was shot multiple times while sitting in his driveway in west Charlotte.
