Officers said 56-year-old Brian Carriker was found dead just after 1 a.m. Sunday inside a home on Tinnin Avenue, near Oaklawn Avenue.
Carlton Hancock has been charged with murder, assault by strangulation, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and motor vehicle theft.
Police said they received reports of an assault with a deadly weapon at the home and when they arrived they found Carriker dead inside from "obvious trauma."
A neighbor told Channel 9 that he heard screaming at the house, and when he walked over, he said he walked into a crime scene.
"(I) come to find out it was a hammer,” neighbor David Weathers Jr. said. “He beat him to death with a hammer."
Police have not confirmed how Carriker was killed, but they are investigating it as a homicide.
"They kept hollering, and I went in the house and he was lying in a pool of blood," Weathers said.
Weathers said as long as he's lived in the area, he's never seen anything like this before.
"No. This neighborhood was never like this,” Weathers said. “There was a little amount of problems, but this is happening right across the street from my house."
CMPD said they worked with Greensboro and High Point police to track Hancock down and arrest him.
