A West Charlotte High School honors student was shot and killed nine years ago when someone opened fire into a crowd at a birthday party.
The homicide remains unsolved.
“When you kill one person, you kill the entire family,” the mother, Mae Helen Moore, said.
Travis Moore, 17, attended a Sweet 16 party for a friend in February 2007 at Stonehaven Apartments on Fernwood Drive.
Someone started sharing the invite on social media, Sgt. Darrel Price said.
“Dozens and dozens of uninvited guests showed up at this party, most of which the party girl didn't even know,” Price said.
Officers estimated up to 100 people crashed the event from different high schools in Mecklenburg County, some considered rivals.
"During a song when everybody was dancing and shouting east side, west side, someone pulled a gun out and fired a shot into the crowd," Price said. "Mr. Moore just happened to be the unlucky person who was struck in the head."
Police said teens who were too scared to talk then are older now and likely more willing to share information.
"They're young adults now and more responsible," Price said. "We're asking these people to take a hard look at what happened and do the right thing."
Family members want someone to come forward.
"I just feel like somebody knows something and whoever it is, they just need to come forward and say something," sister Johnesha Truesdale said.
