Police continue investigation into Mooresville teacher

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Police are trying to determine whether a former Mooresville Middle School teacher committed two crimes against a child, according to an investigation report.

Eyewitnes News obtained the report Friday. Mooresville police confirmed its for the case involving Chip Pickard, a former teacher and head football and basketball coach.

Pickard resigned Tuesday after four years with the school.  

The crimes being investigated are indecent liberties with a child and obscene material, according to the report. In general, police say obscene material often refers to lewd photos.

Pickard has not been charged with any crimes. Police told Eyewitness News they are continuing to interview people as part of their investigation.

Police and the Mooresville Graded School District declined interviews citing the on-going investigation. However, the school district released the following statement:

"Anytime that law enforcement opens an active investigation regarding a school employee it is our duty to cooperate fully and to not take any action that may accidentally impair the investigation.  In addition, the decision to investigate and to announce that investigation belongs to law enforcement.  We take any investigation seriously and decisions on how and when parents can be informed of any information are made in consultation with law enforcement on a case-by-case basis.  The Mooresville Graded Schools will communicate with parents at the appropriate times and to the greatest extent possible. "

Eyewitness News tried to reach Pickard at a listed address and phone but did not hear back.
