CONCORD, N.C. — Concord police arrested a man they said tried to break up a street fight by bashing a teen in the face with a baseball bat.
Eddie Motley is facing assault charges, accused of hitting 18-year old Isaiah Faggart in the face with the metal bat.
The teen's mother showed Channel 9 pictures of his swollen face and black eye.
She received a call Monday that her son was laying beaten in a field.
"It was a hurting feeling. This is my only child," said Monica Faggert Bailey.
Police said the attack happened after a fight broke out in a Concord neighborhood between a group of white teens and a group of black teens.
During the fight, residents in the area called 911.
"My neighbors are firing off their gun and trying to incite a race… with the neighbors behind us," one caller said. "They're like, using the N-word really loudly."
"They've got sticks and big old boulders and everything," said another caller.
Officers said Motley even called 911.
"They jumped on these white people down the street. It was about five or six of them, and I got me a ball bat and jumped outside and tried to stop them and run them off," said a caller who identified himself as Motley during the 911 call.
Police won't say why the fight started.
"We haven't found anything that proves the fight was racially motivated," said Merle Hamilton, with Concord police.
Police said Motley could face felony charges, but they need to interview the victim first.
"The victim of the baseball assault, we have not been able to speak with him," said Merle Hamilton, Concord's interim chief of police.
