Police: Concord man accused of shooting, killing his mother

Ya-Qway Jayshawn Sawyer, 24, is being held in the Cabarrus County jail with no bond.

CONCORD, N.C. — Concord police officers arrested and charged a man with murder after they found his mother shot several times in her bathroom.

Police said just before 1 a.m. Thursday, Cabarrus County EMS asked for their help at a home on Brookstone Drive Northwest, off of Pitts School Road in Concord.

EMS had gone to the house for a “medical-related” incident, police said. As EMS crews were leaving the home, they heard several gunshots from inside.

When officers arrived, they found Ya-Qway Jayshawn Sawyer, 24, trying to leave the scene. Police said they detained him and while checking the home, they found his mother, Katrina Renee Smith, who had died. Police said they found Smith in her bathroom with multiple gunshot wounds.

Sawyer was charged with one count of murder and is being held in the Cabarrus County jail with no bond.

Police said they are continuing to investigate and do not yet know the motive for the shooting.
