CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a crash that left a woman dead in east Charlotte Sunday morning.
Officers said they responded to the crash on North Sharon Amity Road, near Shamrock Drive, just before 10:30 a.m.
When they arrived, officers found an Infinity sedan and a Honda minivan. Both had severe damage to the front of their vehicles.
Police said the driver of the Infiniti, Darryl Davon Wamack Jr., 24, was driving in a “careless and reckless manner” northeast on North Sharon Amity Road. As he got closer to Kimmerly Glenn Lane, Wamack passed a car to his right while speeding. He tried to move into the left lane, but when he began changing lanes, Wamack lost control of his car and crossed the center median into the lanes heading the opposite direction. That was when Wamack’s car hit the minivan head-on -- it was driving in the opposite direction.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital. The driver of the minivan, 35-year-old Ashley Marie Adkins, was pronounced dead by the hospital staff. Wamack was seriously hurt. There were no other people inside either vehicle, police said.
Police determined that Wamack was not impaired at the time of the crash, but speed and reckless driving were contributing factors.
Investigators took out arrest warrants on Wamack for involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and speeding. Police said he will be served the warrants when he is released from the hospital.
Police said neither speed nor impairment seemed to have contributed to Ashley Adkins’ involvement in the crash, and a toxicology report is pending.
