Police: Burglars robbed Ballantyne couple while they slept

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Ballantyne neighborhood is on edge after police said burglars broke into a family's home while they were sleeping inside.

Claudia Cook said she had no idea she was the victim of a crime until Sunday morning when she reached into her wallet for cash.

"We didn't know anything was gone until yesterday. We got home and [my daughter] said her money was gone," Cook said.

Police said the thieves cut a slit in the screen of a garage window and then slipped inside the house sometime Saturday night while the Cooks were asleep.

Cook said the burglars stole money from her wallet and car, and took hydrocodone pills she was using to manage pain following a recent surgery.

"I mean they could have come and killed us, they could have done everything. We didn't know," Cook said.

Cook said there have been other break-ins in the neighborhood and believes her family was targeted by someone who may have been observing them from a park behind their home.

"I'm still upset, I have no appetite because I'm sick over it," Cook said.
