CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A robbery suspect barricaded himself inside an uptown apartment Tuesday morning when Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers tried to serve a warrant on him.
Officers with sniper rifles surrounded the apartments around 9:20 a.m. in the 200 block of North Clarkson Street, near West 5th Street.
Police blocked Clarkson Street while they negotiated with 33-year-old Delmond Cunningham, who they said was wanted for robbery.

Cunningham surrendered to officers peacefully about an hour later, officials said.
Randall King was walking by when he saw all of the officers.
"I didn't know what was going on. I saw people coming out of the apartments, looking kind of shook up," King said.
The police activity prompted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials to place Irwin Avenue Elementary on lockdown as a precaution.

Police have not released information on the warrant they were serving Cunningham. Channel 9 checked and found that Cunningham has a past conviction for armed robbery with a dangerous weapon from 2005, as well as other charges dating back to 1999.
The standoff is the second one to happen in uptown in just three weeks. Police surrounded Circa Apartments on Graham Street just across from BB&T Ballpark. They were trying to serve warrants on three men wanted from armed robbery. The four-hour standoff ended peacefully.
