YORK, S.C. — York Police arrested four people and are looking for a fifth after they said a teenager with a gun tried to carjack a woman while her children were in the car.
It happened Tuesday in the parking lot of the Dollar General on East Liberty Street in York, according to a police report.
A woman was sitting in her car with three children, waiting for another family member who was inside the store. She then saw a group of teens pull into the parking lot and look inside a car parked there.
According to the report, the woman said the teenagers then came up to her car. Two were behind her vehicle and one in a black mask and hoodie came up to the driver’s side. He showed her he had a gun and tried to get inside the car, according to police.
The woman told him to stop and indicated that she had small children inside the car before he tried the door again and then ran away. That’s when she called the police.
Two of the teens left the scene in a small white car, and two others also ran away.
While the woman was speaking with police, officers were able to find two of the suspects in front of the Huddle House on East Liberty Street. They then found a third suspect behind the Huddle House and found a gun behind the restaurant, in a bucket.
Police said later in the day, a car was found behind Harold C. Johnson Elementary School on Jefferson Street. It matched the description of the suspect vehicle in the attempted carjacking. According to police, the car had been reported stolen out of Rock Hill.
A York County K-9 unit was able to track down one of the two remaining suspects in that area as well. Police said they received calls about the location of the remaining suspect, but were unable to find him.
The stolen car was also returned to its owner that same day.
All four of the detained suspects were taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
The Columbia Police Department is familiar with the group and that this is not their first encounter with law enforcement, police say.
