Police: 4 people charged in Lancaster shooting that left 16-year-old dead

LANCASTER, S.C. — Four people have been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old at an apartment complex in Lancaster, police said.

Officers from the Lancaster Police Department responded just after 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 to the Sycamore Run Apartments on Miller Street, where they found two people shot.

A 19-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital before being flown to a trauma center for treatment.

A 16-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle. He died during surgery. His identity has not been released.

According to investigators, the 16-year-old arrived at the apartment to trade a handgun and cash for another gun. An argument then broke out, which then led to a fight and several shots being fired. That was when the teen and 19-year-old were struck.

On Wednesday, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Ja’mez O’zecio Dye, 19. He turned himself in to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon and was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Police announced Friday that Dye was also charged with armed robbery and another count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. His bond was denied.

In addition to Dye, three others have been charged in connection to the shooting.

Jaciahis Jaquise Elder, 19, of Health Springs, was arrested and charged with murder, armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Elder was the 19-year-old who was also shot during the incident. He was arrested after being discharged from the hospital and is now in the Lancaster County Detention Center.

Dondrako Martellous Howze Jr., 18, of Lancaster, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact of armed robbery. He was denied bond and remains in the county detention center.

A 15-year-old from Lancaster also faces delinquent charges for accessory after the fact of armed robbery. He is not in custody and his identity will not be made public because of his age.

After the attempted robbery and shooting, Dye, Howze and the juvenile left the scene and disposed of the firearms used in the crime, police said.
