Police: 13 people hurt in downtown Austin, Texas shooting

AUSTIN, Texas — 13 people were hurt in a shooting in downtown Austin, Texas early Saturday morning, police said. No suspects are in custody.

Austin police officers were called to East 6th Street in a busy area of downtown Austin for a reported shooting at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said in a press briefing. When they arrived, a large crowd of people began to scatter.

According to police, officers found several people who had been shot. They performed life-saving measures on multiple people.

A total of 12 people were taken to the hospital in police cars, personal cars, and by emergency services, police said. A 13th person was taken to urgent care with multiple gunshot wounds.

11 people are in stable condition and 2 are in critical condition, police said. As of 5 a.m., all victims survived their injuries.

“Our officers responded very quickly,” Chacon said. “They were able to immediately begin life-saving measures for many of these patients, including applications of tourniquets; applications of chest seals.”

Police said at this time, no arrests have been made. They do not know how many suspects were involved in the shooting, but one suspect is described as a skinny male with dreadlocks wearing a black shirt, officers said. Police believe that this incident was isolated.

Officers have closed the area as they investigate. They will review camera footage and surveillance video from the area.

“I am very grateful at this point that we do not have more people that are deceased,” Chacon said.
