Man accused in Club 935 shooting caught after asthma attack

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One man is in critical condition after a shooting at a west Charlotte club early Friday morning.

Two men got into a fight outside Club 935, and one man pulled out a gun and shot the other in the stomach, police said.

The shooting happened at about 2:15 a.m. on Summit Avenue.

This is the fifth shooting in the past two years at the club, officials said.

Police arrived just after shots were fired, because they were on a routine visit to club security.

Police put about 17 evidence markers in the middle of the road, indicating shell casings.

Officers were able to capture the suspect, 19-year-old Jonathon Hall, because he had an asthma attack.

The victim was alert but had life-threatening injuries.

Others people were hurt after shots were fired, but there were no serious injuries.

Local business owners and residents told Channel 9 that they're fed up with the violence involving Club 935.

“It happens all the time to the point where I have my concerns for my business and property,” business owner Mike Ingersoll said.

Ingersoll owns Uptown Catering Company and he said he's tired of feeling unsafe.

Many business owners and resident told us there's only way to get rid of the crime.

In a separate incident a block away from the club, two suspects with guns stole money and cellphones from a group of women. Officers caught the suspects.
 
Timeline:

  • February 2013: Man was shot and killed near the club.
  • September 2013: Fight at the club ended with someone shooting and killing a man nearby.
  • May 2014: A fight ended with a man getting shot a few blocks away.
  • April 2014: Another shooting.

CMPD said response, they've increased patrols in the area and also held community meetings with residents and the owner.

“At this point, the burden really falls on  the people who manage the club,” Lt. ZS Chickoree with CMPD said.

Some business owners told Channel 9 they've decided not to expand their companies because they don't want to invest any more money until action is taken and they feel safe.
