According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a Lexus GS 300 driven by 39-year-old Eric McCants II was driving recklessly on outbound Independence Boulevard, changing lanes and speeding. The Lexus then crossed the grass median and entered oncoming traffic.
The Lexus first hit a Buick Enclave before colliding head-on with a Nissan Altima.
McCants was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
An open container of alcohol was found in the Lexus, according to investigators, who said excessive speed and suspected impairment led to the crash.
