CONNELLY SPRINGS, N.C. — We’re a long way from rectangle pizza in Burke County.
Students at East Burke High School were treated to the smell of smoked chicken thighs coming off the grill as they arrived for lunch. It’s part of a partnership between the school district and Morganton’s Case Farms, which is partnering with local farmers to offer the chicken at discounted prices.
The mobile propane grill, nicknamed the “Pig Rig” will travel across the district serving smoked meat at lunch time. The district says students can also look forward to brisket, smoked barbecue, and more.
“I would love to have this every day if I could, even at home,” said Makayla York, a student at East Burke High School. “It’s really, really good.”
In the video at the top of the page, see how the district is using the Pig Rig to teach culinary students valuable skills.
