Lifeguards credited with saving teen who nearly drowned at YMCA pool

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lifeguards at a Charlotte YMCA are being credited with saving the life of a teenager who nearly drowned Wednesday afternoon.

Paramedics responded to a near drowning call Wednesday at the Keith Family YMCA in University City.

In a statement sent to Channel 9 from the YMCA, lifeguards rescued a teenage boy at the outdoor waterpark. They performed CPR and the boy was conscious when paramedics arrived.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene on Mallard Creek Road around 3 p.m. and first responders could be seen outside the YMCA.

Officials said the teen was taken to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries but was awake and talking.

The pool has been closed and it's unclear when it will be reopened.
