According to the Charlotte Fire Department, the blaze broke out around 9:30 a.m. on Dixie River Drive in the Steele Creek neighborhood.
Crews got to the scene just minutes after the fire began, but sadly it was too late for the victim.
The family later identified the victim as 100-year-old, Sue-Lee Lynn; who had lived in the home for more than 50 years. Over those years, Lynn worked as a candyman delivering sweet treats to kids at the Little Rock Apartments and Fairview Holmes, a public housing facility that is now closed.
“Daddy could tell you some jokes now, he could tell you some jokes and make you laugh and stuff,” the victim’s daughter, Mae Francis Lynn said, “He could remember a lot of stuff for him to be as old as he was, daddy would tell you about a lot of stuff, yes he would.”
Mae Francis Lynn was at the home with her father when the fire broke out, she says her father was trying to start a fire using his wood burn stove. Firefighters had to go inside to rescue her, she told Channel 9 the Red Cross and other family members were helping her find housing.
“I just hate that daddy died like this and momma just died July 2nd,” she said.
