CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 35-year-old man died in a skydiving accident Saturday afternoon in Chester County, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

Deputies responded to a 911 call at Skydive Carolina just before 1:30 p.m.

According to Skydive Carolina, the man was highly experienced and had made more than 1,000 jumps.

Before the incident, they said he was jumping alone under his own parachute equipment. Witnesses said they saw nothing unusual about the free fall sequence on the skydive. Skydive Carolina said the man deployed his parachute and that nothing appeared to be unusual.

According to witnesses, the man started to prepare to land at a low altitude, but that the parachute was not leveled for a safe and controlled landing.

Officials are working with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office to determine the cause of the hard landing.

“Skydiving is a close-knit sport with a strong sense of camaraderie. Losing a member of our community affects everyone and we mourn the loss of a friend and fellow jumper. Our sincerest condolences go out to the jumper’s family,” Skydive Carolina said in a news release.

Deputies have not released the identity of the person who died at this point.
