CHARLOTTE — A man riding a motorized skateboard was killed Monday after being hit by a car in the University City area of Charlotte.

It happened just after 6:30 a.m. on West Mallard Creek Church Road near the Interstate 85 overpass.

The crash occurred only two hours after a pedestrian was killed in a separate incident less than a mile away on I-85 South.

The victim of the later crash was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but died shortly afterward, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He was identified as 20-year-old Jalen Donovan Worthy.

Officers said when they arrived at the scene, they found a 2000 Buick LeSabre. Channel 9′s crew at the scene saw a backpack and skateboard on the roadway.

Police believe the Buick was heading southeast on West Mallard Creek Church Road when Worthy, on a motorized skateboard, crossed in its path. Worthy was hit by the car in the left lane.

CMPD said the driver stayed at the scene.

According to investigators, the crash happened in a dark, unlit area and Worthy was not in the crosswalk.

“Really dark, like you can’t see. I just seen a body on the ground but you can’t really see anything coming down through here 6:30 in the morning,” a witness said.

Mallard Creek Church Road at Mallard Glen Road was shut down while law enforcement officials investigated.

Charlotte Fire Department asked drivers to avoid the route during their morning commute.

Police said Worthy’s toxicology results are pending.
