CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a driver who they said struck and killed a pedestrian late Sunday night in east Charlotte.
Investigators told Channel 9 that the collision happened just before midnight on Independence Boulevard near Village Lake Drive.

Officers said Robert Melton, 48, was wearing dark clothes and was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by the car driven by Wayne Daniel.
Officers also said Melton was crossing the road against the pedestrian crossing signal.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, police arrested Daniel and charged him with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.
Detectives said Daniel was speeding and driving in a careless and reckless manner.
Officers had to shut down the outbound lanes of Independence Boulevard for nearly three hours while they investigated.
