SALISBURY, N.C. — A pedestrian has died days after being hit by a police officer who was responding to a call in Salisbury.

Salisbury Police said that on May 18, Officer B.W. Jones was heading eastbound on Old Concord Road, responding to an attempted suicide call, when he hit 59-year-old Howard Miller near Gold Hill Drive.

Howard was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Health Hospital for treatment, where he died on May 21.

The officer was not injured and was taken for a drug and alcohol screening, which is standard practice when an officer is involved in a crash.

The State Highway Patrol will complete the wreck investigation for any criminal charges, while Salisbury Police will complete an internal review to ensure no policy violations occurred. Police said in-car video was active when the accident happened and captured the incident.

Jones was hired in May 2018 and the officer has no prior accidents or disciplinary issues.
