Pedestrian hit, killed in Watauga County

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — A pedestrian is dead after being hit Wednesday night in Watauga County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. 321 near Frank Hodges Drive.

State troopers said it was raining when a 1999 Ford Ranger, traveling west on U.S. 321, struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway.

The pedestrian, 39-year-old Tyler McClure Vance, was wearing dark clothing and the roadway was not lit, police said. Vance died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, 23-year-old Kyle Reese Taylor, was not injured.

Police said the initial investigation didn’t indicate impairment or speed as contributing factors. During the on-scene investigation, authorities said the roadway was closed in the area for several hours.

In a news release, NCSHP said no charges are expected to be filed in this case.
