Pedestrian hit by car at same intersection where man was killed last week

A man was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday after a driver collided with him in west Charlotte.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard and Boyer Street.

Channel 9 crews could see several police officers blocking off the intersection as CMPD’s Major Crash Unit investigated.

The area where the collision happened is near a bus stop and across the street from a Goodwill with Charlotte Douglas International Airport right down the road.

Officers said the man who was hit was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and that the driver remained at the scene.

The collision happened in the same exact spot where a car hit and killed a man last Friday.

Carlington Jackson had just stepped off the bus and was headed to work when a car hit him and drove off. Police hare still searching for that driver, who they believe was a woman driving a Nissan Altima.

Jackson was then hit by two more cars and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told us last week that the area is poorly lit, but it was unclear if that was a factor in Wednesday’s crash.

Traffic Team 9′s Mark Taylor visited the area Wednesday and he said he saw a woman dodge traffic, struggling to cross Wilkinson Boulevard. People who spoke with Traffic Team 9 said the area is just dangerous.

“Because we don’t have a walkway and because of how the road is made, we kind of just have to walk anywhere and sometimes, the cars don’t see us,” bus commuter Xane Santiago said. “There’s not a lot of light, especially if you’re walking when it’s dark. I’ve actually had the bus pass me a couple of times.”

Charlotte has been trying to improve pedestrian safety as part of its Vision Zero initiative.

The city is trying to get down to zero deadly crashes by 2030, but in October, we reviewed a new report showing pedestrian deaths are at a nearly 30 year high.
