CHARLOTTE — Outside of UNC Chapel Hill, the average salary of a professor in the UNC System was below the national average of professors at public universities between 2017 and 2021.
Professors at UNC Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University have the highest pay in the system, with salaries averaging $156,791 and $127,713, respectively, between those years, according to a Triangle Business Journal analysis of The Chronicle of Higher Education and American Association of University Professors data.
The national average for professors at doctoral, masters and baccalaureate-level public universities between 2017 and 2021 was $132,340, per AAUP data.
At UNC Charlotte, the average pay was $122,773 — third highest of UNC System schools.
