ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Nearly a foot and a half of standing water is causing serious damage across Alexander County after days of heavy rain pounded the area.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said one road in the Bethlehem community was made to handle a 100-year flood, but exceeded that over the weekend.

The Alexander County sheriff told Channel 9 he has reports of 16-inches of rain in the Ellendale community, north of Hickory.

Michael Farthing showed Channel 9 what’s left of his garage that was lifted off its foundation during flash flooding along the Little River.

Farthing, who is a volunteer firefighter in Alexander County, responded to a water rescue early Sunday morning south of Taylorsville. When he returned, the water had risen so quickly it flooded his home. Much of the inside was caked with mud on Monday.

Watch the video above as Channel 9's Dave Faherty speaks to neighbors across the foothills dealing with major cleanup.
