CHARLOTTE, N.C. — State troopers said a tractor-trailer going too fast in the rain crashed into a median on Interstate 77 overnight, shutting down the southbound lanes for hours.
The Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around 2:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Lasalle Street.
The tractor-trailer, which was hauling clothing materials, ended up jackknifing and crashed on its side, slamming into the concrete divider wall. The force of the impact scattered large chunks of concrete all over the interstate.
Troopers said the tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved in the crash and that the driver was not hurt. Investigators told Channel 9 the driver was charged with exceeding safe speed for the conditions. It was raining at the time of the crash.
The southbound lanes were closed and only one northbound lane was open while crews worked to remove the big rig and clean up the debris.
Officials had two southbound lanes and one northbound lane open by 9 a.m. and the entire interstate was reopened by 10 a.m.
