Parents of students at Huntersville's Legacy Leadership Academy said they got an email out of nowhere from the board saying the school is no longer “financially self-sufficient” and "the convergence of all these unrelated events have caused legacy to exhaust its resources for its ongoing operations beyond November 1, 2017."
Parents are left scrambling and children's lessons disrupted mid-semester.
"We have no school to go to," one mom said.
She said her daughter is upset, too.
"She's like 'Mommy, I don't want to start over, I don't want to go to a new school,” the mom said.
Parents said that not only do they not know where their children will now go to school, they are devastated to lose a school they loved.
"The staff is amazing here, like the shock of this is unbelievable,” the mom said.
According to the private school's website, tuition is $7,400 per year.
Every parent Channel 9 spoke with said they have not been able to get in touch with the board about finances, or what happened.
"We just want answers as to why the school closed," the mom said. "I'm angry and honestly, I just don't know how it's acceptable to close down a school without any kind of notification.”
Channel 9 reached out to the board through the school services firm Banyan Strategic Partners, which supports the school, and they have not yet responded.
The letter said the board would be reaching out to each constituent.
Channel 9 also reached out to the Department of Non-Public Education about the laws that regulate the closing of a private school.
Officials said the department must be notified when a school closes, but there's no timeframe for when they have to do it, and they have not yet heard from the academy.
