CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Efforts from parents, who wanted to keep an aging school open in Cabarrus County, has paid off.

The Board of Education voted Monday night to keep Beverly Hills Elementary School open and reverse plans to vacate the building in 2020.

Dozens of people spoke out against plans to shut down the school.

“They were so passionate about this school,” former principal Scott Padgett said. “And that’s why I just think this board has got to support this school. It would be very disappointing if they don’t.”

The school has also been added to the capital plan for renovations in 2026.

This vote comes after a study by Morris-Berg Architects was done several months ago.

The idea of the study was to see if it was cost-effective to keep the 65-year-old school operating.

The architects found it would make more sense to build a new school instead of repairing the current one.
