CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said someone fired several shots Tuesday morning into a home in west Charlotte with a 2-year-old boy inside.
Investigators said the shooting on Katonah Avenue, near Rozzelles Ferry and Beatties Ford roads, was not random. Officers are still trying to find the gunman.
Police said a man inside the home was shot in the arm. The victim's 2-year-old grandson was also inside. The little boy wasn't hurt, but was taken to the hospital so a counselor could help him.
Neighbors were shaken by the gunfire and are hope for a quick arrest in the case.
"It's a shame. It's scary to be woken up like that, asleep and then all of a sudden gunshots," neighbor Terrie Cornwell said.
There were 56 crimes that happened within a quarter mile of the shooting in the past six months including 23 serious crimes like assault, break-ins and weapons violations, according to a crime-mapping tool.
"I just pray it gets better," J’Tanya Adams, West End Partners president, said. "My message to them is fear not."
She is trying to calm concerned residents and said there are still a few isolated pockets of trouble.
"It's probably the same house, and the same couple people who are interacting,” Adams said. “My message to them is, ‘We'd like them to change their ways.’"
The neighborhood where the shooting took place used to be one of the most violent parts of the city back in the 1980s, but residents fought to keep crime out of the community. Now, many of the historic homes are being renovated into pricey new properties that sell for $400,000
