GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis is helping children get ready for school.
Davis, a former winner of the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, handed out 250 backpacks, plus school supplies. in Gaston County on Saturday.
As people lined up for the giveaway, Davis noticed some supplies were missing, so he took a quick trip to Walmart to make sure they had enough.
“As a young kid, there were some years that I started back to school and didn't have the school supplies I needed to be successful,” Davis said. “So, with you guys being here today, we want to make sure you don't have to have those challenges.”
Aside from school supplies, Davis also brought 60 pizzas to make sure everyone went home with a slice to eat.
