Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey to miss rest of season due to ankle injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury he suffered in Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, the team announced.

On Monday, an MRI showed an injury severe enough to place him on injured reserve.

The Panthers said he will miss out on the final five regular season games because of the time it would take to recover. It is also his second time of injured reserve this season.

McCaffrey tried to loosen up the ankle during the second half of the game Sunday, but the team said he finished the game with 35 yards on 10 carries, which were all in the first half.

After McCaffrey returned from a five-game absence due to a hamstring injury earlier in the season, he totaled 315 total yards and a touchdown on 50 touches the past three weeks.

The Panthers said he finishes 2021 with 99 rushes for 442 yards and a touchdown and 37 receptions for 343 yards and a touchdown in seven games.
